Reading the Quran is an act of worship therefore it should be done only for the sake of Allah and should be done according to the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam. Therefore reciting Quran in Tajweed is an obligation on every one. The way it narrated to us was via the chain till Prophet Muhammad sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam, therefore we should try to recite in the same way. Imam ibn Jazari said that as we are required of understanding and implementing the Quran, we are also required to recite in the way it was revealed and narrated to us through the chain linked back to our Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam.
Some of the benefits of correcting the recitation of Quran:
a) Better understand the Quran, will incline to know the meaning.
b) It makes that person love and enjoy the recitation and never make him/her bored.
c) Will always ponder the meaning and reflect upon it and apply it in his/her life.
Some of the benefits a person gains when reciting or learning Quran or virtues of reciting the Quran:
a) Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said the best of you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it. So we will best of the Muslims. Uthmaan (May Allah be please with him) narrated that the Prophet (sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “The best of you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it” Reported by al-Bukhari.
b) Reward of the reciting the Quran – Our beloved prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said the person who recites one letter from the book of Allah then he will get a reward for it , each reward is counted 10 i.e multiplied 10 times, He said that he does not say alif lam mim is one letter but alif is one letter , lam is one letter, mim is one letter. Just imagine if someone recites bismi, surah fatihah, one page? How much reward would he/she get. This is out of Great Mercy of Allah. The person who wants lots of reward should invest that which is profitable in this duniya and the next. ‘Abdullah ibn Mas ‘ood (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah he will one good deed for it. And each good deed is multiplied tenfold. I am not saying “Alif Laam Meem” is one letter, rather “Alif” is one letter, “Laam” is one letter, and “Meem” is one letter. (Saheeh: at-Tirmidhee)
c) The prophet said no group shall gather in any of the houses of Allah to recite the book of Allah or study the book of Allah amongst each other except that the peace and tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will envelope them, Angels will surround them and Allah will mention them by name to those who are with Him i.e. Angels. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “No group of people shall gather in one of the houses of Allah, to recite the Book of Allah, and to study it amongst each other, except that tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will envelop them, the angels will surround them, and Allah will mention them to those who are with him.” Reported by Muslim and others.
d) The person who memorizes the most Quran and recites Quran the best is to be made Imam for the congregational Salah.
e) Also Prophet praised the person who recited the Quran and is fluent in recitation will be in the gathering of angels and who strangles difficulty will get two rewards. Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “The one who has masters the (recitation of) Qur’an will be with the obedient Messengers (i.e. the Angels), and the one who recites the Qur’an and stutters in it, and it is difficult upon him, will have two rewards. Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
f) The prophet said there is no envy except in two matters: the man whom Allah has taught the Quran and he recites in the hours of day and night, his neighbour listens to it and says ‘’I wish I had given what he was given so I can recite in such a way” and the other person is the person who see a person who have wealth and spends his wealth in Allah’s way and he wishes to get the same. It means he should wish to get the same blessings not that the blessing should be taken away from his brother. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said, “There is no envy except in two matters. A man whom Allah has taught the Qur’an and he recites it during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day. His neighbor listens to him and says, ‘I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given, so that I may do what he is doing; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it on what is just and right, whereupon another man says, ‘I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given, so that I may do what he is doing.” Sahih al- Bukhari.
g) The Quran is a treasure; Allah gives Him whom He wills. Once He gives some one, it’s his duty to keep it that’s why our Prophet Muhammad (sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said us to keep reviewing once we memorize it. The past scholars thought its great sin to forget the Quran as he doesn’t not forget it but because of his sin. Abu Moosa al-Ash‘aree (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said, “Keep on reviewing the Qur’an, for, by He Who’s Hand my soul is in, the Qur’an runs away (i.e. is forgotten) faster than camels run away from their ropes.” Sahih Muslim.
h) Prophet also instructed us to beautify our voice while recitation. He said the one who does not beautify his recitation of the Quran is not amongst us. Means he is not upon our sunnah and he is not following the way of Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam and His companions. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said, “The one who does not beautify his recitation of the Qur’an is not from us” Sahih al-Bukhari.
i) Also we see the Quran does not stop its benefits for its companion in this life. Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said recite the Quran, for it will come in the Day of Judgment and intercede for its companion, asking Allah to forgive this person and elevate his status in paradise. Jaabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “The Qur’an is an intercessor whose intercession is accepted, and its testimony is believed. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him into Paradise, and whoever places it behind his back, it will drive him into Hellfire” (Saheeh:Ibn Hibban).
Aboo Umaamah al-Baahillee (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) say: “Recite the Qur’an for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an interceder for its companions” Sahih Muslim.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “The companion of the Qur’an will come on the Day of Judgment, and the Qur’an will say: “O My Lord! Adorn him,” so the crown of honor will be placed on him. Then it will say “Oh My Lord! Give him more.” So he will be dressed in the gowns of honor. Then it will say “Oh My Lord! Be pleased with him.” (Allah) will then be pleased with him. It will then be said to him “Recite and rise. He will be increased with each ayah a reward”. (Hasan: at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Khuzaimah, al-Haakim)
j) Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said the one who memorizes the Quran and learns the meaning of the Quran and acts upon on it, his parents will be dressed on the day of judgement with crowns brighter than the sun (placed on his parents head). Also they will be dressed in special gowns of paradise. These gowns are worth more than this world and what is in it. Then his parents will ask “why are we dressed in these gowns?” It will be said to them because your son took the Quran, meaning he memorized, understood and applied the Qur’an in his worldly life. Buraydah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever recites the Qur’an, learns it, and acts upon it, then his parents, on the Day of Resurrection, will be dressed in a crown of light; its light brighter than that of the sun. And his parents will be dressed in gowns worth more than this whole world. They will ask: ‘Why were we given this gown?’ It will be said, ‘Because of your child’s memorization of the Qur’an”. (Hasan: al-Haakim).
k) The Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said it will be said to the companion of Quran : read and rise , recite as you used to recite in this world, for indeed your level is at the last ayah you recite and person will start reciting what he memorized in this world, each ayah he recites from the Quran; he will elevate to the higher levels of paradise. Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (Sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an ‘Read, elevate, and recite as you used to recite in the Dunyaa; for your station will be at the last ayah that you recite” (Saheeh: Abu Dawud, at-Timirdhee, Ibn Maajah)
Some of the manners while reciting Quran
1) Be silent, quiet and attentive. Should not involve in other talks while Quran being recited.
2) Protect the Quran from anything unbefitting for it. Place in high spot and should not keep anything top of it out of respect. This is applicable for the Quran cds and tapes, should not leave for children to play, should write anything inside or on it, should not lean on with your back or with your arms.
3) You should protect its papers and should burn if the papers gets unusable or unreadable. You should protect from dirt, dust, oil etc. You should not read the Quran in inappropriate places like bathroom.
4) You should read with contemplation and peace of mind. As you read on, you should fill you heart with the Quran. You should not speed through the Quran like some magazines, newspapers etc.
5) You should not leave the Quran open when you leaves. Imam Qurtabi mentioned in the introduction of his tafseer.
6) You should not recite the Quran while you are yawning or passing wind.
7) You should not touch the Quran if you are not in state of purity. You must make wodhu (ablution) before you touch the Quran and in case if you are in major impurity then you should make ghusl before touching the Quran. And Allah knows Best.
